Jazz from the reservations

I felt it was time we took a look at the treatment of the natives who get lost in the fever of the commercialized celebrations of the holiday season. My homage to the spiritual peoples of the world who may as well be invisible due to the lack of respect that's thrown their way. So hit our page listen to the tune but more importantly remember we have a long way to go.
New piece posted on myspace. Jazz from the reservations. I dedicated to the natives who are so often overlooked. DH

Drummer Walfredo Reyes JR. featured on TRIBE online radio. starting this weekend. Link will be posted. It's FREE.
my cell number has been hacked ^I've been receiving messages from my cell provider from strange numbers, apparently in replies to fictitious calls coming from me. Thankfully my server was able to secure records that I've made no such calls. So to my friends (and strangers) that were somehow reached through this error, apologies . DH

Changing winds

It's been roughly a year since this country inaugurated a African as president. I emphasize the inauguration due to the reluctance of a sizable part of citizens that refuse to embrace the concept. I've been around for roughly a half century. I've experienced a wealth of things. Truly I am thankful. Having said this, It's still a climate of denial that permeates everything of merit along color (not cultural) lines. The xmas images of the Nordic Jesus and jovial santa has to still be traumatic to youngsters yet untouched by bias and skewed images of what is "good". Musically the artist have contributed so much to the global vocabulary of sound, yet we get saturated with those who want praise for the Beatles in spite of their obvious "sampling" of Blues. Our icons are designated as opposed to chosen. Mediocre talent from bleach blond puppets miming and humping their way through bass heavy synth tunes. Finally we have the "rock star" video games. DAMN. How low can we go? Before some pious pundit responds that it's a learning tool, I ask Learning what? That success is the measuring stick of and artist? or covering weak tunes enhances creativity/ lol. I mentioned Obama to illustrate that the pendulum is starting to swing. The glass houses and fragile superficial cocoons that we built on smoking mirrors have to recede and make way for a new wind. Real Love, Real inspiration for the up and comers. Cotton candy is not considered a meal to the hungry.

resisting that tunnel vision

I'm involved with two projects, which implies two producers. Well actually I try to give the impression of dealing with producers, however they seem to produce nothing but headaches and theory. How can you describe the Earth if you avoid the mud? The rub being that folks believe their visions so strongly that it becomes blinding and binding. Not a shred of freedom in avoiding flexibility. That tunnel vision sets in then bam! you've just cloned the same old doo doo. I've got to tap into the real producer, the universe. DH
Being the creative as opposed to doing it, is my goal.

Why Jazz?

I'm often asked why I play Jazz? Firstly I don't know what Jazz is. It's something that listeners dub the sound, not the cats who actually play the music. Jazz is supposed to do what a true artist wants which is to Improv as often as reasonable. Music has to have structure to a large extent but not a restricted time signature or chord progression all the way through on all tunes. The freedom of the expressive chord is the ultimate gift a music piece can offer. So I just play what I hear from my soul. I've done all the other crap. Even film scores. Music has to be experienced not worshiped from myopic commentators.

versatility

I'm on two CD projects currently. I mean it actually has me reaching for those basics again. Harmonics, counter beats and arrangements. That's not as revealing as freshness. How not to be redundant . I run from radios and I pods. It has a way of distilling itself into your head. U end up playing some variation of that unwanted sound. Versatility is a sign that growth is present. Without growth u cannot offer a piece anything but robotic effort. So as I sit in studio mode I'm hit with the paradigm shift. I'm clunking like hell. LOL

Work a thon

I'm on two projects which is rare this time of year. I'm grateful to be involved with some top artist. One thing that stands out is that they have updated Endorsements. Mines don't give me the cool toys these cats have. I'm trying to be diplomatic about this. LOL. So if I don't get the upgrades i'm going ghetto and get my friends to start dong some midnight shopping with a moving truck. Stuff gonna turn up missing. LOL
I'm on two CD projects outside of the band. So I hope my Endorsements includes free drums LOL.

Searching the canvas

The landscape of the art world as well as the social strata keeps shifting. It's almost like the axiom of whether the egg or the chicken came first. Life imitates art is a thought, though not a good one. We have seemed to be healing due to new blood in the political realm. Finally the hope that the elected remembers who actually got them in their positions. Much too often politics are reflective of theater not reality. The music scene is also theater in a very base manner. The so called stars are manufactured, not authentic. Self praise is the constant hum. "Look at me" is the banner. So I often find myself searching for that fresh canvas to express what I see and hear. So i've decided to make this one of my crucial to do things in 2010. I'm hoping that others do the same. Without this as a goal life won't just imitate art, it will imitate itself.
Trying to get it done
